Antonio Fernando Skarmeta Gómez

Biography

Antonio Skarmeta obtained his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Murcia in 1995. He became Associate Professor at the University of Murcia in 1997 and Full Professor of Telematics Engineering in 2009. He served as Vice-Dean for Infrastructure at the Faculty of Computer Science from 1991 to 1993, and later as Vice-Dean for External Relations from 1997 to 1999. He was Head of the Department of Information and Communications Engineering from 2001 to 2007. He also coordinated the PhD programme in Advanced Information and Telematics Technologies from 2002 to 2010, which received the Spanish Ministry's quality distinction.

Since 2008, he has been the Coordinator of the European Projects Office of the University of Murcia, attached to the Vice-Rectorate for Research. In this role, he has been responsible for the EuroScience project awarded to the University of Murcia, as well as the COFUND project associated with U-IMPACT-COFUND, which he coordinated as Principal Investigator. He is currently the national representative of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) in the Horizon 2020 programme for the Excellent Science pillar in the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions, and a representative in the European Commission's Human Resources and Mobility group.

Antonio Skarmeta is the head of the Intelligent Systems and Telematics research group at the University of Murcia, a group recognised as excellent in regional research project calls and a leading group at the University in terms of funding and scientific output. He has been the Principal Investigator of several projects funded by FEDER for Scientific-Technical Equipment and Network Infrastructure, including UNMU05-23-002, UNMU13-2E-2536 PEANA: Advanced Experimental Platform for the Internet of Things - Smart Ambient Campus (IoT as a Service), and UNMU08-2R-008 PLEIADES Constellation, as well as grants for the technological parks LabConect@2 (PCT-430000-2010-005) and Proces@2 (PCT-430000-2010-006).

He has supervised 21 PhD theses, participated in 20 European projects, and coordinated several international projects, including initiatives under Horizon 2020, Regions of Knowledge, TEMPUS, and Research Potential programmes. He has signed 27 research contracts with regional, national and international companies, and is the author of six patents - two of which are currently under exploitation - as well as 20 intellectual property registrations.

Antonio Skarmeta has authored more than 120 papers in international journals and over 200 conference papers. He has served on numerous programme committees for conferences in computer science, security, mobile networks and the Internet of Things, including PERCOM, ICC, Globecom, Adhoc-Now, IEEE SMC, ACM Group, IEEE MSN and TrustBus. He has acted as chair or co-chair of conferences such as WF-IoT 2015, 2016 and 2018, GIoTS 2017, and IoT workshops and tracks at Globecom and ICC 2015 and 2016, as well as the PITSaC workshop on Pervasive Internet of Things for Smart Cities held within IEEE AINA, and the esIoT workshop. He is also an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Part B and Security and Communication Networks, and has served as editor for several special issues in journals such as IEE Proceedings - Communications, IJIPT Journal, Computer Networks, International Journal of Web and Grid Services, Mobile Information Systems and Personal Mobile Communications.
